WHEN TO CLEAN MEMBRANES

Fouling of the membrane by suspended solids, microorganisms, and mineral scales can occur during normal operation of a reverse osmosis water purification system.  When deposits build up, it can cause loss in water output or loss salt rejection, or both.  When ever the normalized water output rate drops by 15% from its initial flow rate (the flow rate established during the first 24 to 28 hours of operation), or when the salt content increases significantly.

The water output rate will decrease if the feedwater temperature goes down and this is normal and not a symptom of membrane fouling.
