Meter based system have an advantage over time based system because if you dont end up using the water you think you would then a timer system can regenerate before it is needed wasting regeneration salt. Also you use more water then you expected in a timer system you may find that the water becomes hard. To set the meter you simply match the number of people in your house and the grains of hardness in your water.
Manual softeners are perfect for commercial use or for use when you dont have a drain for a permanent hook up. If you dont have a drain you can hook a garden hose to the back of it and initiate the regeneration only when you need to. When it is done simply remove the hose and you are done.

In this process the chemical structure of scale forming
