Question
I just purchased a new Water Softener Sears Kenmore model Ultrasoft 800. It was a floor model so it was a great price. Installed it today, and when I put it in first put it in "service mode" for a few of minutes with an adjacent cold water tap open, we had very red water coming from thru the tap for several minutes. Is this normal to have so much red water for a first time use? After seeing the red water, I checked the unit date code, I see the "new" water softener was tested 3 years ago. I am now concerned that the resin has dried out and degraded badly in the 3 years it has sat on the shelf. Should I worry about this, or should I just proceed with the Sanitizing step, and start using the unit. Appreciate your input! Many thanks in advance. Randy
Answer
Buying a softener that has been sitting around is not a good idea. Since resin is always wet bacteria in the system will grow to massive numbers. Once you get an infection the only cure would be to disassemble the unit, remove and discard the resin and clean everything with bleach before installing new resin. When it comes to softener, used and old is never good and you take a high risk that it will cost more to bring it up to snuff than if you bought a new unit. You can try to manually regenerate it 3 or 4 times and then measure the bacteria to see how it is doing.
