Question
Im looking for an in line filter to add to my garden hose to eliminate water spots when washing the car. I saw your in line carbon deionizing and softening water filters. Could you provide me some product recommendations? Also, where would I get the garden hose connector fittings to add to the in line filter so I could connect it to my garden hose?
Answer
I just is not feasible to put a deionizer filter on a hose that will make spot free water for car washing. You see these pop up on TV from time to time but the quickly disappear because they do not work. The reasons the do not work are : 1. The flow rate on the filter is too low. The maxiumim flow rate on a 3" diameter filter is 1/2 GPM. A 4.5" diameter filter can flow up to 2 gallons per minute which would be the bare minimum for a car wash application. If you move water faster it does not have time to remove the dissolved metals that cause spotting. 2. The capacity of a deionizer filter is very low when fed with tap water. A 3" X 10" filter will last 400 grains. The average water contains about 10 grains of minerals per gallon of water. Some are much higher, some are much lower. At that level of contamination the filter will last about 40 gallons giving a cost of about $1.00 per gallon of water and you would have frequent filter change-outs. Your best bet is to install Reverse Osmosis because it produces water that is pure enough and is the least expensive way to produce water. If you were to put deionization after R.O. you would drop the cost per gallon to as low as $0.05 per gallon but it is not necessary to make spot free water. It is unfortunately much more complicated then simply attaching a filter to the garden hose. We have a specialty website that is only for spot free water. It gives more info and shows you specific products for accomplishing you goal of spot free car wash water. You can find that here : http://www.spot-free-water.com
