Occasional Rust Staining After A Water Softener

Date : 10/13/2016

Question

We have a Water Boss water softener and it's 15 yrs old but works well, giving us lots of soft water. Every once in a while the water in the toilets is rusty looking so my husband does a regeneration cycle until the water runs clear again.

Could the resin beads be at fault? He put a restoration solution in the resin beads a while back. Would that make the beads deteriorate?

Answer

It doesn’t mean the resin is necessarily bad although the age would make you think so. It sounds like it is not set up right for the amount of time between regenerations.

You can use this calculator to get the right setting and if it falls significantly short or you have low pressure, then it would be time to change the resin or even the whole softener because the head probably wont last too much longer.
