Cations, positively charged ions and Anions, negatively charged ions are present in water as silicates, chlorides, fluorides, sulfates, bicarbonates, nitrates, phosphates and other ferrous materials.
A conductivity meter is used to measure these elements in water by transmitting and electrical current between two electrodes. Water with high concentration of ions conducts electricity more easily conversely water with low concentration of ions conducts electricity less easily.
Ions affect the inorganic analysis results such as IC/AAS/ICP/MS. In addition it may retard cell and tissue growth in biological research. Dissolved inorganic solids are removed by cation and anion exchange resins or distillation. Dissolved Inorganic solids can be reduced by up to 98 percent by reverse osmosis.
