Question
We use a Barnstead Nanopure Diamond UV system to produce HPLC grade water for our laboratory. Is there a need to flush the unit prior to dispensing water? Is there any value added in flushing the unit for two minutes prior to using the dispensed water? We use the unit in recirculating mode and wait until the resistivity is greater than 18.0 mOhm-cm before use.
Answer
There is no need to do a flush. Flushing would be more for removing built up endotoxin in an Ultrafiltration membrane (UV/UF systems).
If your measurement requirement is "ultra low", you will want to throw away the first 500 ml's of water you draw off because the bacteria filter is not recirculated and can build up some bacteria and the related TOC's from their waste.
Putting the unit in recirculation mode will assure the highest purity when you need it. Each time the water recirculated any TOC and ions are removed. The water is essentially "Polished".

This high capacity four housing lab water system is designed to provide up to 3 l.p.m. of ultrapure water exceeding ASTM and CAP Type I, II or III specifications.
