Question
I’m thinking about buying a previously used e pure barnstead system, my only concern is the meter one mega ohm reads err. Can you tell me why these meters normally read error and how easy is it to fix the issues that cause it. Also how close do these systems actually get to reagent grade water plus 18 mega ohm using fairly clean city tap water
Answer
As good as a used systems sounds, you really want to consider a new one instead.
The meter is not calibratable and most used ones are way off on the reading. A new meter is about $1500.00
If the pump goes out, which is likely on a used system is about $1400.00
We used to sell used ones as well but there were far to many problem so we stopped.
That being said, the ERR means the reading is higher than 18.2 megohm which is not chemically possible so the system shows error.
If can be caused by a bad meter or it can be caused by air in the cell (air has high resistivity)
As far as the purity on tap water, it will do 18 megohm, but for a very short time. The cost per gallon would be very expensive. By pretreating the water with reverse osmosis you can extent the life 15X which would easily pay for itself.
You can also pre-treat with distillation or a reverse Osmosis/DI system to even further cut your cost to produce type I water.
