Question

I am trying to find out when the soft water system does its metered flush how much salt concentrate is been flushed to the drain. I live in a older house that has black steel drain pipes and am worried that the added salt will corrode my sewer system faster. 4 people in house estimated 42000 GPD

Answer

Usually salt discharge would not be a huge problem. The higher concentration of salt in the drain is only see during the salt draw cycle and it is then rinsed in the final cycles of regeneration.

During normally use, it actually add very little salt to the water and certainly not enough to harm the pipes.

Some people separate out the softener drain and run it into a drywell. A dry well is a buried 55 gallon tank with drain holes in it, surrounded by gravel. It allows you to drain water that you do not want to go to the sewer or septic tank.
