Question
Hello, I have a Kinetico water softener, single tank w/ electronic timer. I am not sure of the exact model #. It is about 14 years old and not softening as well as it should. I would like to replace the resin. I am wondering if fine mesh resin is the correct material, I am not sure if there is a screen installed and hoping someone would be familiar with this unit. I live in AZ and the water here is very hard. Do I need to sterilize the tank before replacing resin? Thank you for your assistance!
Answer
Unless you are on well water you would never need to use the fine mesh resin since city water supply' to not usually contain iron. Any softener can have either a standard screen or a fine mesh screen at the base of the riser. If you have iron stain in your toilet or sinks, then you can try fine mesh resin and buy a fine mesh screen if you are not sure what you have. Otherwise you would use standard resin. Here is an article that will point you in the right direction for all you need to know about changing the resin in a water softener. https://www.apswater.com/how_to_change_resin_in_a_water_softener.asp
