Silver and Carbon In a Filter Offers Little Protection

Question

I have learned that the hygiene media (silver shield) is being replaced each year on my house water filtration system. Is that a normal time frame to have that replaced?

Answer

It sounds like you have activated carbon. If you are on city water that is a very bad idea. What you have is silver impregnated carbon which does little if anything to slow bacterial growth in carbon systems and the down stream piping.
