Answer

Yes you can add tannin resin to a water softener. It is a compromise that will greatly reduce the color in the water.

The best way is to have a separate softener with only tannin resin in it, but that can get expensive. Most people just add this to their softener. The setting for salt dosage should be increased by 8 -15 lbs per cubic foot of resin added.
