Question

what do they mean by grains capacity of a water softner and how many gallons of water can 1 cuft of resin soften

Answer

How many gallons is dependent on how hard the water is.

A grain per gallon is a measurement of hardness equal to 17.1 p.p.m.

Water hardness test kits measure in grains per gallon.

A standard softener has a capacity of 30,000 total grain removal.

There are many different capacity sizes available.

If your water has 10 grains per gallon you could expect the softener to put our 3,000 gallons between regeneration cycles.

For every 30,000 grains of capacity your max flow rate is 7 g.p.m.
