Question
I have a Park International RT844 tank which I was told was a charcoal filter which is part of a system to remove sulphur from my well water A turbine in the main water line in creates air which causes the sulphur to oxidize and then goes through this filter I was also told that I could replace the charcoal in it which I am in the process of doing When I opened the tank there was nothing other than 34 plastic cages 15 inches or so of spheres and nothing else The local place who sold me the charcoal says to put gravel in the bottom and then the charcoal on top up to but below the stand pipe Any advise before I do it There is no other tanks other than the pump bladder tank and in line filter The tank in question has a bleeder devise on the top thank you
Answer
What you have there is an air mixing and degass system. Upstream you have an air venturi that forces Oxygen into the water. That Oxygen is used to oxidize things like Iron and Hydrogen Sulfide (rotten eggs smell). The plastic cages and the spheres are used to add surfaces for some of these contaminants to stick to after they are oxidized. The tank also has a valve on top that vents off excessive air. This system does not used activated carbon. You can add Automatic sediment filtration, activated carbon system and/or a water softener after your oxidizer tank do improve scaling and improved organic contaminants and any chlorine you may want to remove.
