Question
Bought a house with a Ametek PSCL00 whole house filter housing its clear and filter is black It follows a salt water softening system Well water Getting some rust and odors Can you recommend a filter My other house no other system used AP801s and I was always happy with flow and sediment elimination

Normally the only thing you would put in a clear housing would be a particle filter. If it was a carbon filter then the likelihood is that you are flowing it too fast since that filter would be too small. It would also grow a lot of algae.
The softener would normally remove most iron. I wonder if your resin is just fouled or if it is not soft for very long.
Rebedding the softener might fix it for you and if not you make need to add an oxidizer system like the Katalox Systems found here :
