Question
Ultrafiltration (UF), is this for pre-filtration before an RO/DI system?
Answer
Ultrafiltration is used for many different applications. The main applications are : Removal of colloidal silt prior to Reverse Osmosis (hollow fiber UF) Reduction of pyrogens and endotoxins of medical water (Hollow fiber or Spiral wound) Removal of trace particulates in ultrapure water. (Hollow fiber or Spiral wound) Removal of organic contamination in ultrapure water. (Hollow fiber or Spiral wound) Liquid food processing. (Hollow fiber or Spiral wound) You would not normally use ultrafiltration as a standard pre-treatment to Reverse Osmosis unless you has a problem with silt pluggage of the RO Membranes. The reason you would use hollow fiber UF in that case is that the membrane is durable and holds up well to back washing and repeated cleaning thus extending the life of the RO membranes greatly.
