Question

My softened water shows about the same PPM as what it was before installed the softener Is this the new PPM meter reading showing that weve replaced other minerals with sodium

Answer

Since Softening is also known as ion exchange, trading minerals of calcium for sodium would give you roughly the same p.p.m. before and after the softener.

What you can do it measure the pre and post hardness with a hardness test kit. keep in mind that those kits usually measures in grains per gallon and that 1 gpg = 17.1 p.p.m.

10 grains incoming would be 171 p.p.m and after the softener it might read 1 grain which would be 17.1 p.p.m.
